cost of piano

My Chickering console cost me $2000. My tuner charges $90 but I don't need him every 6 months--usually every 2 years. I charge $40 for a half-hour lesson.

I have seen perfectly serviceable pianos at estate and moving sales for a few hundred dollars. Don't go by what the teacher charges--go by what her or his students are playing after each year. If you're playing "Pop Goes the Weasel" after several years, it's time to get a new teacher. A good teacher is one whose 4th-year repertoire is Beethoven or Mozart sonatas, and who teaches you how to avoid RSI. Association membership is not as important as other criteria such as how many professional journals they read in a year, if they have presented papers at conferences (not teachers' conferences but musicology conferences), and how advanced their library of repertoire is (if the teacher doesn't have piano concertos in their library, that means they expect you'll never get that far).

Piano Cost

New uprights range from $3000 to $6000 for a very nice instrument.
Tuning depends on your area, but expect $100 roughly each six months.
Lessons are even more fluid, from $25 / half hour to $90 / half-hour depending on your level of expertise and how much the teacher is in demand.

My tuner charges me $65 for a single tuning session.

A good upright will cost about $3000, but you can find a working one for around $1000.

I'm not sure how much lessons are.
